Routine Dental Exams (Checkups)
Good dental care isn’t just about treating issues as they develop. On the contrary, you have a better chance of preserving your smile by preventing issues from forming in the first place. Routine dental examinations are a vital part of prevention, and allow Dr. Jenkins a chance to thoroughly inspect your teeth and oral tissues for signs of impending trouble. During an examination, Dr. Jenkins may also collect digital X-rays and/or use a digital intraoral camera for a more accurate diagnosis, or to update your dental records, if necessary.
What We Look For
The most common dental issues—tooth decay and gum disease—can largely be prevented with consistently good hygiene and preventive dental cleanings. But when they develop, they can be most effectively treated when detected early. During your checkup, Dr. Jenkins will carefully check for early signs of tooth decay, such as weakened areas of tooth enamel, to ensure that your teeth are not in danger of cavities. He will also check for early signs of gingivitis (the first stage of gum disease), such as inflamed, bleeding, and/or receding gums.
Dr. Jenkins will also perform a comprehensive oral cancer screening, inspecting your mouth and throat tissues for abnormalities that could indicate a cause for concern. If necessary, he may recommend a soft-tissue biopsy for a more precise diagnosis.
